This is a Reverse Graduated filter and differs in that the transition is from dark to light from the middle of the filter (ie in reverse to a standard graduated filter). This is a benefit when shooting bright horizons (like a sunset) to enable more control over the exposure and balance the foreground image.
Reverse soft graduated filters are ideal for landscapes with a bright horizon like a sunset shot etc..
This Ray Masters reverse graduated filter will reduce the light entering the camera on one half of the frame. The filter measures 100mm x 150mm enabling the graduation to be moved to suit the scene.
An ND2 will reduce the light by 1 Stop
An ND4 will reduce the light by 2 Stops
An ND8 will reduce the light by 3 Stops
An ND16 will reduce the light by 4 Stops
Neutral density filters (also known as ND’s) produce a grey neutral tone and are used to reduce light, enabling more control over exposure and depth of field without affecting colour or contrast. They are especially useful in bright light conditions to avoid overexposure. Since ND filters uniformly reduce light at all wavelengths, there is no effect of the colour rendition.

Bought this filter as a trial purchase as a cheaper alternative to Lee filters after receiving a Lee filter holder as a present. The cost of a set of Lee filters to replace my older 84mm SRB set was looking quite prohibitive on my monthly camera budget so I shopped around. These filters fit the Lee holder perfectly and performance wise are better than the SRB filters I own. I haven’t noticed any strong colour cast and they don’t appear to affect sharpness. So for me they perform as expected. Based on my experience with this filter I have ordered a 4 stop ND. Can’t say whether they are better than the Lee alternatives as I don’t own any and given the price and performance of the Ray Masters filters I can’t see me buying any Lee any time soon. Well done Ray Masters.
