UV

UV

The purpose of a UV lens filter is to prevent ultraviolet light entering the camera.

UV filters have a big impact on the photographs taken with film cameras. Black & white and colour film is sensitive to UV light, so the use of a uv filter helps reduce haze in the photo.

The use of UV filters on a digital dslr camera or with cameras with newer types of film has little effect. This is because digital cameras and newer film types are insensitive to the UV light. A UV filter is still a useful bit of kit though and can be used as a lens protector.

The quality of the UV filter used will effect the image quality.  Using coated and Multi coated filter types will help reduce the impact.  The coatings on the filter help reduce lens flare and increase light transmission.  Coated filters are recommended but are more expensive.
